I was descending from a great day of hiking near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Deep gorges, rock, water, bad weather, good weather, total immersion in the roughness of nature.
There she was, staring at me, her eyes following me as approached the bridge. She stood there like a sentry guarding a secure national border. I had no means to cross the bridge without her permission. A larger-than-life advertisement welcomed me back to civilization.
I crossed the bridge, my mind infected for a moment with the thought of a Magnum. I removed the last banana from my rucksack, took a bite, believing I was immune to commercial influence. Later, I wondered if it was the advert that triggered my desire to consume the banana? Was I immune to the brunette on the bridge, or had my subconscious been influenced?
Next time you are outdoors, be aware of product placement. You can never be sure how it may influence you. There is no escape from advertising.
