It seems to be forever and a day since construction began on the new underground tram system. In fact, work began in December, 2010. Since then, the face of the city is ever changing as new roadworks, traffic diversions, and alternative pedestrian pathways come and go overnight. I never know if the route I choose to take into the city will be navigable.
I had to smile yesterday as a big red open-top tourist bus drove past the Marktplatz (market place), a group of Japanese tourists pointing their cameras simultaneously towards the construction site. I wondered if the construction sites are now being marketed as tourist attractions, or whether the tourists are enjoying an experience they did not expect.
I rarely go into Karlsruhe city these days, but tend to spend more time in Stuttgart. There are no construction sites there, and city life and culture feels more pleasant. I prefer to drink a cup of coffee without the noise of a jackhammer in my ear.
